QUARTER 3 CURRICULUM OUTLOOK:

MATH- Grade 4 Module 5: Fraction Equivalence, Ordering, and Operations
In this 40-day module, students build on their Grade 3 work with unit fractions as they explore fraction equivalence and extend this understanding to mixed numbers. This leads to the comparison of fractions and mixed numbers and the representation of both in a variety of models. Benchmark fractions play an important part in students’ ability to generalize and reason about relative fraction and mixed number sizes. Students then have the opportunity to apply what they know to be true for whole number operations to the new concepts of fraction and mixed number operations.

Math HW Help: Duane Habecker on YouTube is a great resource. Search for 4th Grade Module # and Lesson #. He will review/model homework problems.

ELA- In ELA, our quarterly theme is perseverance. We will be studying novel and characters who demonstrate perseverance through adversity. Our first novel will be Bud, Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis. We will study Bud, the main character, on his journey of finding his dad. We will look at how his character traits, the events of his journey, and the settings of the story impact his decisions and ability to persevere through adversity. Our second extended text will be student selected in the form of Book Clubs. Students will choose a book they are interested in studying further. They will meet with their Book Club groups two times a week and discuss their group’s novel using a variety of strategies and topics presented in our ELA classes.
In writing, we will deepen our understanding in the genre of narrative writing. Students will write a realistic fiction piece that will feature a character showing perseverance through adversity using elements of a story and narrative writing. In vocabulary and word study, we will continue to study Greek and Latin roots through word inquiry and our WTW sorts. For the remainder of the year, students will have 2 weeks to study each sort due to their increased difficulty.

SCIENCE- In Science, we will study Waves, Speed, and Energy.

SOCIAL STUDIES- We will study the Midwest Region and also start studying the Western Region.
