Welcome to Mrs. De Young's Kindergarten Class in the Gold Community at Grand Prairie!

As of January 17, 2017, we have 23 students in our class.

Please check our class page often. I strive to keep it updated with each week's important information.

If you have not yet signed up for the Remind notifications please text the characters "@9ge8k" to the number 81010 to opt in. You can elect to get notification through the app or through email.

Every student has a yellow "Take Home" folder that goes between home and school DAILY. Please check this special communication tool every night to see what we are up to each day and for all of our most important news and updates. Send any notes or papers back to us in this same yellow folder and your child will turn them in to my Cinderella mailbox.

Every child will have a yellow fluency reading bag that should go between home and school DAILY. We will use the leveled readers inside each day in class and it will be your child's HOMEWORK to read them at home each night.
I CAN statements are simple sentences designed from Common Core Standards. They are written in student-friendly language. I CAN statements break down learning objectives into actions that students can read, understand and perform. In our class, I CAN statements are posted in a yellow pocket chart and reviewed. This helps students to understand the expectations, become more responsible for their learning and more reflective of their work. Kindergarten Outcome Assessments are created from I CAN statements, which are posted on each assessment. This helps parents and students to have a clear visual of kindergarten expectations, and a better understanding of their childís development and growth.

Quarter 3 ~ "I CAN" Statements:

I can put letters together to make words.
I can name uppercase and lowercase letters.
I can sound out words.
I can identify the first, middle, and ending letter in a word.
I can hear, say, and write words that rhyme.
I can clap the sounds I hear in a word.
I can break up words into parts.
I can put together the first sound with the last part to make a word.
I can break up a word into the first sound and the last part.
I can separate and say the beginning, middle, and ending sounds in C-V-C words.
I can add or change letters in words to make new words.
I can say the sound a consonant makes,
I can quickly read high frequency words.

I can identify characters, settings, and major events in a story (with help).
I can recognize different types of text (poetry, storybooks).
I can retell stories that Iíve heard and include key details.
I can ask and answer questions about key details in a book (with help).
I can ask and answer questions to find the meaning of a word in a book.
I can use the illustrations to tell about a story (with help).
I can compare and contrast what happens to characters in stories that Iíve heard (with help).
I can identify the main topic and retell key details in a book (with help).
I can tell you the connections between two people, ideas, or events in a book (with help).

I can use drawing, and writing to name a topic and tell something about it.
I can improve my writing by adding details with help from adults and my peers.

I can show how the numbers 11-19 are made of ten ones and more ones.
I can count to 100 by 10ís.
I can count to 100 by ones.
I can show addition.
I can add to solve word problems.
I can make a number less that ten by putting together 2 groups of pictures or objects.
I can show what number is needed to add to another number to make 10.
