Teacher Info

Alexander Zacharias - Fourth Grade  (Send e-mail)

Welcome to our classroom webpage!

This week students in my class will participate in benchmark screenings provided by FastBridge Learning. FastBridge is District 157-Cís new screening instrument that will take the place of AIMSweb. Similarly to AIMSweb, this assessment will be provided in the fall, winter and spring to help teachers determine which students are likely to meet the end of the year learning goals and which students may require intervention. This computer based assessment measures performance in reading and math. The district will be providing training to all teachers on score interpretation. More information will be forthcoming to parents. I look forward to working with your child this school year.

**REMIND - If you would like text message updates regarding important information in the classroom please visit the "Remind Setup" document in the downloads section of this webpage!**

*This year, we are implementing a new math curriculum entitled Eureka. After piloting last year, we found that this rigorous program will support students in understanding mathematical concepts. Although this is a new way of teaching and learning, I ask that you please be patient as we become comfortable with this new program. Please note that each night your child will be bringing home a packet which contains a "Problem Set" and "Homework" section. The Problem Set includes problems that we completed in class. This can be used to help with the homework as the questions mirror each other. Please also note that not all problems may be assigned each night. I will update this webpage daily with the assigned problems for each night. I sent home paperwork last week explaining how to set up an online account with Euereka which includes some homework support! Please contact me with any questions that may arise. *

Curriculum Overview Week of 9/18/2017:

Throughout the year, I would like to share an overview of what to expect at the beginning of each week. I will be updating this website weekly to share what we will be doing in class, as well as upcoming due dates and tests. If at any point in the year you have any questions, ideas or concerns please do not hesitate to e-mail or call me!

Math: This week, we will be working on lessons 13-17 in Module 1. We will be focusing on multi-digit whole number addition and subtraction. We will also be using estimation to check the reasonableness of our answers.

ELA: We have begun our first unit, "New Beginnings". Throughout this unit, we will be exploring Immigration during the times of Ellis Island. We will be using fiction and nonfiction texts to study literary elements such as main idea & detail, context clues, how to make an inference and more! We have begun by working with the text, If Your Name Was Changed at Ellis Island.

Writing Workshop: We will begin our first quarter unit of informational writing! The students will choose a natural disaster to research and write about. We will be practicing how to take notes from reliable resources.
