Alexander Zacharias - Fourth Grade  (Send e-mail)

Welcome to our classroom webpage!

*With PARCC approaching, the students have been using technology to familiarize themselves with the layout of the assessment. I encourage students not to stress about PARCC, but also drive them to try their absolute best and prove what they know! We have taken several of the PARCC practice tests in the classroom, however, I encourage the students to practice at home as well. They can do this by logging into the Pearson website and choosing the 4th-grade assessments. After completing these practice assessments, the students will be given feedback as to how they scored. To practice, please visit https://parcc.pearson.com/practice-tests/.
Additionally, students can also log into FrontRow Education. We use this resource regularly in the classroom and students certainly enjoy watching themselves grow. Students can practice both Math & ELA tailored to their individual needs. To log in, please visit student.frontrowed.com/#login. The students will use their first name, and their classroom number as their last name. Our classroom code is zachay. If you have any questions about PARCC practice, please do not hesitate to contact me!*

I would like to share an overview of what to expect over the next few days. I will be updating this website weekly to share what we will be doing in class, as well as upcoming due dates and tests. If at any point in the year you have any questions, ideas or concerns please do not hesitate to e-mail or call me.

Curriculum overview for the week of April 24th, 2017:

ELA: We are beginning our fourth quarter unit, Heroes. Over the next several weeks, we will be using ancient Greek Mythology to study theme and other literary elements! This week we will continue our fourth quarter novel, Percy Jackson.

I ask students to continue reading 20 minutes per night to build confidence, fluency and comprehension!

Reading Bucket List
**There will be a change for the fourth quarter Bucket List project. Details to come! In the mean time, I encourage students to continue reading - the more they read the larger the reward!**

This program encourages students to pick up books they wouldn't normally read, by choosing one of sixty genres! Students are challenged to read ten texts a quarter, and also create one project each quarter. I sent home information about this, including the PowerPoint that I shared with students. This program will encourage both reading at home and school. In doing this will increase vocabulary, fluency, confidence and background knowledge.

Math: Our current unit is Algebra & Patterns. We will continue using variables within addition, subtraction, multiplication and division expressions. We will also be reviewing equal & unequal expressions and solving for the value of a given variable. **We will be testing early this week**

Social Studies: We will continue working with the West region of the United States this week. **QUIZ will be 5/5- Students will need to know the state name, abbreviation, capital and location on a map. Feel free to use the link under the "cool links" tab to study!**

Science: We will continue to look at animals and the specific internal and external adaptations they use to survive. Be sure to ask your child how the eye works - they loved our experiment last week!!

Writing & Word Study - Our fourth quarter unit is Narrative Writing. We have been brainstorming personal experiences to help develop ideas for a realistic fiction piece.

What is STEM? STEM is an acronym that refers to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Learning is collaborative and project-based. Our students will be given the opportunity to attend this class on a weekly basis with Mrs. Jozaitis as their instructor. The following fourth grade projects are planned for this school year:

Quarter 1: Catapults
Quarter 2: Wind Generation
Quarter 3: Prop Racer
Quarter 4: Ray Catcher

*We use the Front Row web program in our classroom for extra math and reading practice.*

The website is www.frontrowed.com.
The students will use their first name and their classroom number as their last name.
