Welcome to our classroom site! Please read below to find out what we are currently learning in 5th grade!

Erin's Law:
Governor Pat Quinn signed Erin's Law in January of 2013, which requires all schools in the state of Illinois to provide age appropriate sexual abuse and assault awareness and prevention education programs for their students in grades Pre-K through 12. In response to this legislation, Frankfort School District 157-C will be adding, "Child Lures Prevention: Think First and Stay Safe", curriculum for the school year. The curriculum is available in the school office for parents to preview. Erin's law curriculum will be presented to our students during the week of January 22, 2019.

IAR: State testing will begin the week we return from spring break. Students will complete the first of two ELA assessments on 4/3 and 4/4. The following week, students will complete the first of three math tests on 4/9, 4/10, and 4/11.

Good sleep and a healthy breakfast will do wonders for students during testing week!:)

Spring Break: Students will be receiving a math packet, if in my math class, to complete a series of review and challenge problems. This will support them in preparing for the IAR assessment.

What are we learning?

Math: In math this week, students are working to find volume in Module 5. Students will be using cm cubes to hypothesize and work to discover the formula for finding volume. Students will take a quiz on Monday, 3/18. The mid-module assessment will be postponed until after break.Students will complete their mid-module when we return. Students will receive their study prep sheet prior to break.

In order to prepare for state testing, students will be completing a series of practice problems. Students will complete one practice problem per day in the classroom. All problems will be completed on their Seesaw math account. This will be a great resource for you if you are looking to see what types of problems your child will be expected to solve. Feel free to check out their blog!

Reading: In reading this week we are diving deep into poetry. Students are studying multiple poems. We are focusing on identifying the tone, point of view, and literary devices within a poem. Students will also practice finding evidence in the text to support their answers.

Social Studies: This week students will be wrapping up their unit on the Early English Colonies.

Writing: We have moved on to our prose constructed response unit for quarter 3. Students will practice responding to literary analysis writing prompts.
