Teacher Colleen Jozaitis - STEM teacher  (Send e-mail)

The year will be coming to an end quickly. It has been a fabulous experience bringing STEM to Chelsea. I have had so much fun with your children during the STEM process. It has been a delight watching them problem solve and be so proud of the designs.

Please remind your children to use safety during STEM, cooperate respectfully with their peers and teachers, and complete their projects in a timely manner so they can be tested and evaluated.

NEEDED FOR 5th GRADE STEM: 16 oz, 20 oz or 2 liter plastic carbonated empty pop bottles

What is STEM?
It is practicing what real scientists do.
It is an experience that encompasses Science concepts, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.
It is where students will learn "How to Learn".
It is where students will become better Science citizens.
It is a place where it is safe to take risks and learn more from what we do wrong than what we do right.

This year I have the pleasure of being the STEM teacher for all of Chelsea School. I come to this position after 12 years as a fourth grade teacher here at Chelsea. I have an abundance of experience teaching science to children at this level. It is a passion of mine and I am thrilled to be able to help spark the interest of science and engineering to the students of Chelsea. Students will come to me once a week just as they would go to Music, Library and Art. Students will focus on the Engineering aspect of STEM but will understand scientific concepts, use mathematical skills, research and display their data with technology.

Students will earn a "Satisfactory" or "Unsatisfactory" mark on their report card for STEM class. To receive a "Satisfactory" a students must consistently complete their work, cooperate with their partner, and be safe in the classroom. If a student receives an "Unsatisfactory" parents will have been notified with several consequence forms throughout the quarter from Ms. Jozaitis.

If you ever have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me.

This week in class

Friday
Third graders will view a video of a dragster race and research about the Junior Dragster races. Then the students will design and engineer their own dragster race car that will be tested.

The fourth graders will view a video about solar energy and research how it works. Then the students will design and engineer a solar car that will be tested using artificial and natural light.

Firth graders will view a video of a rocket launch to space that has GoPro cameras attached to it. They will research about rockets and then engineer a water rocket that will be tested using air pressure.
