Mrs. Melby's 2024-2025 Teacher Page
Wow! We’ve already wrapped up the first quarter, and it has been such a great start to the year! The 5th graders have settled into a wonderful routine, and it’s been an absolute pleasure getting to know each and every one of them. I can honestly say that they are a fantastic group of kids!
Parent-Teacher Conferences
Thank you so much to everyone who signed up for parent-teacher conferences. I’m really looking forward to discussing how your child is doing in 5th grade and celebrating their progress. If you are unable to attend the conferences next week, no worries at all! I’m happy to connect with you at another time. Just send me an email, and we can arrange a time to talk.
Weather Changes
Well, we all knew the weather would start to change, right? Let’s hope we get some nice sweater weather before the winter coats come out! Since the weather can be unpredictable this time of year, please make sure your child is prepared to go outside for recess and/or PE every day. A jacket or sweater might be a good idea to keep in their backpack just in case. Thanks for your help!
Our Core Values at Chelsea School
At Chelsea School, we believe every student is special and has their own unique gifts and talents to share. That’s why we focus on three core values: Respect, Responsibility, and Caring. Both students and teachers work hard to practice these values every day. Let’s continue making this year amazing by coming to school ready to learn, having a positive attitude, and supporting each other. I truly love coming to school each day, and I hope your child feels the same way. Together, we can make this a fantastic year for everyone!
As always, thank you for your support! Let’s keep working together to help your child grow and thrive. 😊

E-Learning Schedule- Schedule is on the right:)
As we move into the season where inclement weather is more likely, I wanted to share our plan for E-Learning Days, should they occur.
In the event of a school closure due to weather, we will transition to E-Learning using Microsoft Teams. Our 5th-grade students have already been trained on how to access assignments and announcements through this platform.
Here are a few key details:
-
Schedules:
- Students will follow the schedule provided on the right (or attached).
- Each student will also receive a hard copy of the schedule, which will be sent home in advance. Additionally, it will be available in the downloads section of their district laptops.
-
District Laptops:
- Students will be sent home with their district laptops ahead of any anticipated E-Learning Day. Please make sure the laptop is charged and ready to use.
If you have any questions about the E-Learning process or need assistance accessing Microsoft Teams, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Thank you for your support in helping our students stay on track, even on snowy days!
I’m excited to build a strong partnership with you this year to support your child’s learning and success! To keep communication open and consistent, I’ll be using several tools to share updates, reminders, and important information:
-
Teacher Webpage:
- Homework assignments will be updated daily in the "Assignments" tab.
- The weekly schedule and class activities will be posted under the "This Week in Class" tab.
-
Remind App:
- For text updates specific to your child's Math or Advanced Math class, please click the Remind link that corresponds to your child’s Math block. This is a great way to stay connected to what’s happening in class!
-
Email Blasts:
- I will send occasional emails with class updates, upcoming events, and important reminders.
I look forward to working together to make this a great year for your child. If you have any questions or need help accessing these resources, feel free to reach out!
Accessing ClassLink from Home
Students can easily access the ClassLink Launchpad from their home computers by following these steps:
-
Visit the Downloads Section
- Directions for accessing the ClassLink Launchpad from home are available in the Downloads section on this page.
-
Install the Browser Extension
- To avoid reentering usernames and passwords every time, students should install the required browser extension.
- Instructions for adding the extension to your web browser are also linked on this page.
Note: If the extension is not installed, login credentials will need to be entered each time.
-
Additional Resources
- For more detailed instructions, visit the district website and navigate to the "Student/Parent Technology Tutorials" section.
By following these steps, students can enjoy seamless access to their resources on ClassLink.
I wanted to let you know about an important upcoming lesson we’ll be having as part of our school’s efforts to promote student safety and awareness. In January 2013, Governor Pat Quinn signed Erin’s Law, which requires all schools in Illinois to provide age-appropriate education on sexual abuse and assault awareness and prevention for students in grades Pre-K through 12.
At Chelsea Intermediate School, our social workers will be leading these lessons in the classroom using the Think First and Stay Safe program. This curriculum is designed to teach students about staying safe and recognizing “Child Lures,” which are tricky tactics someone might use to make a child feel unsafe.
These lessons are taught in a way that is age-appropriate and supportive, with the goal of helping students feel empowered and confident about their personal safety.
If you have any questions about the program or the lessons, please feel free to reach out. Thank you for your continued support in helping us create a safe and caring environment for all students!
Birthday Reminder 🎉
Birthdays are such a special time for our students, and I love celebrating each and every one! I will be sure to recognize each child’s birthday—and even half-birthdays. 😊
However, I want to remind everyone of a couple of important guidelines, in accordance with district policy:
-
Birthday Invitations: Invitations can only be handed out at school if there is one for every student in the class...or all the boys or all the girls. This helps keep things fair and ensures no one feels left out.
-
Birthday Treats: Unfortunately, we are not able to accept food items for birthdays or parties. While it’s always fun to share treats, we are unable to allow food in the classroom due to district guidelines. However, you are more than welcome to send in a non-food item, such as a pen, pencil, or other small gift, for each student in the class.
For your reference:
- Block 1 (Homeroom): 22 students
Thank you so much for your understanding and cooperation in making birthdays a fun and inclusive experience for all of our students! 🎂🎉
